Informative Boat Tours on Historic Mono Lake
Ever wonder how Mono Lake islands Negit and Paoha look upclose and personal? Well, now, for the first time in over 40 years, visitors can enjoy an interpretive boat tour of this historical waterway. Tioga Lodge Resort, near the western shore of Mono Lake, has teamed with Mono Lake Boat Charter to offer a unique 90 minute excursion around the lake.
The tour will present a perspective of the lake that is seldom seen, says Tioga Lodge General Manager Walter Vint. He further emphasized that wildlife viewing and photographic opportunities will highlight the outing as guests are taken to areas of Mono Lake that can only be reached by boat.
Naturally, we must be concerned about the delicate balance of nature in and around Mono Lake, said Tom Crowe, Mono Lake Boat Charter owner. The boat we chose for the tours features state of the art environmental safeguards.
According to Crowe, the 20 foot Caribe built boat is referred to as a fiberglass hull inflatable. It carries a maximum of eight passengers and has the same design used by the Coast Guard for ocean rescue. |

Propulsion is provided by two 50 horse Honda, four stroke engines, specifically developed for use in such environments. The boat complies with the strict environmental guidelines established for use on Lake Tahoe. This watercraft is safe and quiet, continued Crowe. Thus it is ideal for our personal and exclusive presentation of Mono Lake's natural history.
Crowe holds both a USCG Masters and California Commercial Boat Operator's License. He retired from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game after 20 years experience in field research.
Tom's knowledge of wildlife refuge areas and bird sanctuaries, says Vint, allows him to give our visitors a wonderful educational overview of Mono Lake's importance to migratory birds.
It is suggested you call Tioga Lodge at (888) 647-6423 for reservations. Private tours are available but must be booked in advance.
