McGee Creek Rope Tow Dave McCoy, the driving force behind the present day Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, created a place to enjoy downhill skiing, near McGee Creek. The spot had good snow and was close to the highway. He and his friends used ropes and pullies, powered by a gasoline engine to get themselves up the hill. A monument near McGee Creek, complete with gear wheels marks this "first" ski area! Back to the Map
